At Berkswell, we are committed to embedding the principles of the Equality Act 2010 into our school through a key part of our vision, ‘by emphasising the value of unity, we create a sense of togetherness which supports and celebrates individuality, reinforcing a sense of belonging. Children are actively encouraged to recognise the value of every individual and to embrace diversity. There is a tangible sense of acceptance within our school.’
To ensure that our learners have the knowledge, empathy and attitudes to flourish in modern Britain, they need an understanding of the diversity that underpins our society and is enshrined in UK law.
We embed an age-appropriate understanding of the concept of diversity and discrimination by developing children’s understanding of the world we live in through our PSHE and R.E. worldview curriculum as well as wider school worships.
PROMOTING THE NINE PROTECTED CHARACTERISTICS
The Equality Act 2010 protects people in Great Britain from discrimination, harassment and victimisation. It recognises nine protected characteristics and promotes equality, diversity and inclusion for all.
The nine protected characteristics are:
- Age
- Disability
- Gender reassignment
- Race (including colour, nationality, ethnic or national origin)
- Religion or belief
- Marriage and civil partnership
- Sex
- Sexual orientation
- Pregnancy and maternity
At Berkswell CE Primary School, we are committed to creating a welcoming, inclusive and respectful environment where everyone is valued. We do not tolerate discrimination of any kind and actively encourage pupils to celebrate diversity, show respect for others and recognise the unique qualities that make each individual special.
This commitment is rooted in our Christian vision and values and is reflected in all aspects of school life. Visitors to our school frequently comment on the strong sense of belonging, kindness and acceptance that exists within our community.
We recognise that children develop their understanding of equality and diversity over time. Therefore, we teach about the protected characteristics in an age-appropriate way through a carefully planned curriculum, ensuring that pupils build knowledge, understanding and empathy throughout their time at Berkswell.
How We Promote the Protected Characteristics
The protected characteristics are actively promoted through:
- Planned opportunities across the curriculum and throughout the school year
- Our Christian vision, values and everyday school culture
- Collective Worship and charitable fundraising activities
- School policies, including behaviour, inclusion, safeguarding and anti-bullying policies
- Positive role modelling by all adults within the school community
- Responding to teachable moments and current events as appropriate

- Promoting respectful language and developing inclusive vocabulary
- PSHE, Relationships and Sex Education (RSE) and Religious Education World View curriculum.

Examples of Protected Characteristics in Action at Berkswell
Pupils develop their understanding of equality, diversity and inclusion through:
- Learning about different faiths, cultures and traditions through RE and themed events
- Exploring inspirational people from a wide range of backgrounds and cultures
- Celebrating Black History Month, Young Minds, Anti-Bullying week, World Down Syndrome Day and other national awareness events where appropriate
- Studying significant historical figures who challenged discrimination and promoted equality
- Reading books that reflect diverse families, communities and experiences
- Learning about visible and invisible disabilities and how to support others with empathy and respect
- Anti-bullying initiatives that promote kindness, respect and inclusion
- Developing an understanding of different family structures and relationships in an age-appropriate way
- Participating in fundraising and community projects that support people both locally and globally
- Welcoming visitors who share their experiences, beliefs, cultures and achievements
