Year 1 Provision
Year 1 Provision: Building on the Strong Foundations of EYFS
Our Vision
At Berkswell, we believe every child deserves a learning environment that recognises where they are in their learning journey. Our Year 1 provision builds upon the excellent foundations established in Reception, ensuring children continue to learn through curiosity, exploration and purposeful play, while developing the knowledge, skills and confidence needed for future success.
At Berkswell Church of England Primary School, we know that children do not suddenly stop learning through exploration when they leave Reception. Research from Early Excellence highlights that children under seven continue to learn most effectively through a balance of practical experiences, purposeful play and high-quality adult teaching. We have carefully designed our Year 1 environment to reflect this understanding while meeting the increasing expectations of the National Curriculum.
Most importantly, our Year 1 continuous provision has been developed specifically for our children. At the end of Reception, EYFS staff complete a detailed strengths and gaps analysis across all areas of learning. This information is shared with Year 1 staff and directly informs the planning of the classroom environment, resources and continuous provision. As a result, the learning opportunities children encounter from their very first day in Year 1 are tailored to build upon what they already know, address identified next steps and ensure every child continues to make strong progress.

What does it look like?
Continuous Provision Designed Around Our Children
Our Year 1 learning areas have been carefully planned using information gathered from the Reception cohort. Provision is enhanced throughout the year to revisit key concepts, strengthen identified areas for development and provide opportunities for children to apply new learning independently. Resources and enhancements are regularly reviewed so that the environment continues to reflect the needs of the children rather than following a fixed plan.
A Seamless Transition
Children are already familiar with many aspects of the Year 1 environment before September. Throughout the Summer Term, Reception children take part in regular transition sessions within the Year 1 classroom, becoming familiar with routines, expectations and adults. The continuous provision approach provides a familiar way of learning, helping children feel secure and confident as they move into Key Stage 1
High-Quality Teaching Alongside Independent Learning
Daily direct teaching in reading, phonics, writing and mathematics remains at the heart of our curriculum. Alongside this, children have planned opportunities to practise, revisit and deepen their learning through carefully designed continuous provision, supported by skilled adult interactions that extend vocabulary, thinking and problem-solving.
Promoting Independence
Resources are organised so children can access them independently, make purposeful choices and take responsibility for their learning environment. This develops confidence, resilience and the organisational skills needed for successful learners.
Progressive Challenge
As children grow in confidence and their learning develops, the provision evolves with them. Adults carefully adapt enhancements, introduce new challenges and respond to ongoing assessment, ensuring children continue to be motivated, engaged and appropriately challenged throughout the year.
Why has Berkswell adopted this approach?
Our approach ensures that children experience a smooth and developmentally appropriate transition from the EYFS into Key Stage 1. Rather than experiencing a sudden change in expectations, children continue to learn in ways that reflect how young children learn best, while gradually increasing the level of independence, challenge and academic rigour expected in Year 1.
By using Reception assessment information to shape Year 1 provision, we create an environment that is responsive to each cohort's needs, enabling children to consolidate learning, address any remaining gaps and build securely towards the Key Stage 1 curriculum.
